Talking About “Descendants”

A little girl asked her Mother…“How did the human race appear?”
The mother answered...”God made Adam & Eve and they had children and then all mankind was made.”
Two days later the girl asked her father the same question.
The father answered...”Many years ago there were monkeys from which the human race evolved.”
The confused girl returned to her mother and said…“Mum, how is it possible that you told me the human race was created by God, and Dad said they developed from monkeys ?”
The mother answered…“Well dear, it is very simple. I told you about my side of the family and your father told you about his.”

Edenhope Buildings in the 1860s & 1870s

James Reader b1830…d1916

After James’ arrival in the District he worked at a number of occupations. He quarried practically all the stone for the stone buildings in and around Edenhope the stone coming from Scrubby Lake. The stone was used in the foundations of the Catholic Church and also included in the Mundarra Woolshed. A store room in Simkin’s Store comprised of pitsawn timber rafters, shingle roof and stone walls, was an example of his work. He built a cellar under the Edenhope Department Store (then The Federal Store) for the payment of one bag of flour.

The Close’s & Clarke’s Lake

From England came a man named Close
To seek Australian land
He’d heard many an old man boast
Of what his mates had planned

He chose and bought some Apsley soil
On which to run his livestock
But the growing gums were too much toil
So another man he got

“Old Foxy” as they called him came
To make the country stand
And help to deal with the falling rain
That covered the grazing land

“Foxy” dug a drain they say
With an old and well worn spade
The water gushed down each rainy day
To a swamp not far away

Every year the drains were opened wide
Till the swamp became a lake
And the bearded man watched with pride
At the water it would take

Today the gums grow round it’s edge
And make a scenic shade
But let us thank the great old man
Who dug it with a spade
